Negroni Sbagliato: What It Is and What NYC Menus Charge

By Nico Ferraro · October 25, 2026 · 7 min read

Editor’s noteNegroni sbagliato means mistaken: a Negroni with Prosecco for gin. How it differs from a Negroni and what NYC Italian menus charge, $16 to $19, October 2026.

Sbagliato is Italian for mistaken, and a Negroni Sbagliato is a Negroni with Prosecco where the gin would be: one part Campari and one part sweet red vermouth, topped with sparkling wine. On the New York Italian menus checked here it costs $16 to $19 at full price, and at the two restaurants that list both a Sbagliato and a standard Negroni, the Sbagliato is $1 lower. Prices, ingredient lines and hours below come from each restaurant’s own website, and the recipes from Campari’s own site, all checked in October 2026.

What does a Negroni Sbagliato cost at NYC Italian restaurants?

Three of the five menus below print a Sbagliato, one of them spelled Spagliato. The other two print near relatives: a Negroni with no gin in it and a grapefruit drink built on Campari and Prosecco. Rows run from the lowest full price up.

Drink as printed Restaurant and address Price Ingredient line on the menu
SPAGLIATO Bacaro, 136 Division Street $16 prosecco, campari, & punt e mes
NEGRONI SBAGLIATO Tarallucci e Vino, 15 East 18th Street 17; 11 from 3 to 6pm daily Campari, Vermouth Rosso, Prosecco
SBAGLIATO Via Carota, 51 Grove Street $19 Campari, vermouth & Prosecco
Negroni Emiliano Babbo, 110 Waverly Place $23 select aperitivo, vermouth blend, lambrusco
Nonna’s Little Nip Don Angie, 103 Greenwich Avenue unlabelled Grapefruit, Campari & Prosecco (Can be made non-alcoholic)

Tarallucci e Vino prints prices without a dollar sign, so its figures are read here as dollars. The three Sbagliato prices span three dollars, from Bacaro’s $16 to Via Carota’s $19. For comparison, the standard Negroni lines in the same set run $17 at Bacaro, $20 at Via Carota (Negroni Classico) and $23 at Babbo (Negroni Classico, made with Portofino gin).

What does sbagliato mean?

Sbagliato is Italian for mistaken, as Campari’s own page for the drink notes. That page says the Negroni Sbagliato was invented in 1972 by Mirko Stocchetto in Milan, who made it by accident: asked for a Negroni, he poured Prosecco instead of gin. That is the producer’s own account, and none of the five restaurant menus checked prints a history of the drink.

A New York menu uses the word the same way. Tarallucci e Vino’s dessert list includes a Babà Sbagliato, glossed on the page as a “mistaken” caramelized rum cake.

Spelling is not settled on menus. Bacaro prints SPAGLIATO, while Tarallucci, Via Carota and Campari all write sbagliato, so search a drinks list for both.

What is the difference between a Negroni and a Sbagliato?

One ingredient changes. Campari’s recipe for the Negroni is 1 part Campari, 1 part London dry gin and 1 part sweet red vermouth. Its Sbagliato recipe keeps the Campari and the sweet red vermouth, drops the gin and fills the glass with sparkling wine. Both are poured straight into a glass of ice, garnished with a slice of orange and served in a rocks glass.

Bacaro’s two menu lines show the swap cleanly. The NEGRONI reads “gin, campari, & punt e mes” at $17; the SPAGLIATO reads “prosecco, campari, & punt e mes” at $16. Via Carota’s pair is less explicit: Negroni Classico, “Campari, house vermouth,” is $20 and the line does not name a spirit, while the Sbagliato, “Campari, vermouth & Prosecco,” is $19. In both rooms the Sbagliato costs $1 less than the standard Negroni.

The gin original is older. Campari’s Negroni page dates it to Florence in 1919: Fosco Scarselli is said to have created it at his bar, Café Casoni, after Count Negroni asked for a splash of gin in place of the soda in his Americano.

What type of cocktail is a Negroni, and where does a menu file it?

By Campari’s recipe a Negroni is a three-ingredient, equal-parts cocktail built in the glass over ice. Menus disagree about where the Sbagliato belongs.

  • Via Carota lists the Sbagliato under Aperitivi, beside three other aperitivi, all $19. Its seven Negronis sit under Cocktails: six at $20 and a Negroni Zero at $16.
  • Bacaro puts the Spagliato in the same COCKTAILS list as the Negroni and a Negroni Bianco ($17).
  • Tarallucci e Vino groups its Sbagliato under a NEGRONI heading with a Negroni Nuovo (gin, Aperol, Campari, vermouth rosso) and an Oaxaca Negroni.

What to eat alongside is a separate question: the antipasto course is not the same thing as aperitivo snacks, a distinction laid out in what antipasto means on an Italian menu.

When is a Sbagliato cheapest?

Of the menus checked, at Tarallucci e Vino during its happy hour. The restaurant runs it from 3 to 6pm every day in the bar and outdoor area only, and the Negroni Sbagliato drops from 17 to 11, a six-dollar saving of about a third. One detail separates the two versions: the happy-hour line names Casoni where the regular line names Campari.

Bacaro’s happy hour runs 5 to 6:30pm, and its list prints a gin Negroni at $12 rather than a Spagliato. That Negroni is five dollars under the regular $17 and four dollars under the full-price Spagliato, so during happy hour the gin version is the cheaper drink. The Bacaro site shows hours of 5pm to 12am Tuesday through Sunday and Monday closed, but the menu page does not say which days the happy hour applies, so confirm before building a plan around it.

For how a discount hour differs from a true aperitivo, see aperitivo vs happy hour.

Which menus print a cousin of the Sbagliato?

Babbo prints a Negroni Classico at $23 (“portofino gin, campari, vermouth blend”) and, at the same $23, a Negroni Emiliano: “select aperitivo, vermouth blend, lambrusco.” It is not a Sbagliato, since the line names a “select aperitivo” rather than Campari and lambrusco rather than Prosecco, but the ingredient line lists no gin. Babbo’s site lists hours of 5 to 10pm Sunday through Thursday and 5 to 11pm Friday and Saturday.

Don Angie lists Nonna’s Little Nip as “Grapefruit, Campari & Prosecco (Can be made non-alcoholic).” The drinks page shows $9 and $19 after the entry without labelling them, so confirm the price with the restaurant. Its Negroni Rosa, with Piucinque gin, is $20. The bar opens at 4:30pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30pm Friday to Sunday.

Which one should you order?

  • Lowest full price: Bacaro’s Spagliato at $16, open Tuesday to Sunday from 5pm.
  • Lowest Sbagliato price in this set: Tarallucci e Vino’s happy-hour Negroni Sbagliato at 11, 3 to 6pm in the bar or outdoors.
  • A Sbagliato filed with the aperitivi: Via Carota’s at $19.
  • A Negroni without gin: Babbo’s Negroni Emiliano at $23.

If the plan is wine rather than bitter cocktails, what an enoteca is covers the other kind of pre-dinner stop.

How these were chosen: each restaurant’s own website had to print a drinks list with prices and either a Sbagliato or a close Campari, Prosecco or gin-free Negroni relative. Prices are compared only where a drink line carries a clear price, so Don Angie’s unlabelled figures are left out of the comparison, and a restaurant that makes a Sbagliato without listing it is not counted. Prices and hours change, so confirm them before you go.
